Bank Robber Sentenced to Nine Years in Prison

GREENBELT, MD—U.S. District Judge Deborah K. Chasanow sentenced Bobby James Ransom, age 30, of Washington, D.C., today to nine years in prison followed by three years of supervised release for bank robbery, announced United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein. Judge Chasanow enhanced Ransom’s sentence based on two prior convictions in the Montgomery County Circuit Court: for robbery, in April 2007, for which he was sentenced to six years imprisonment, with all but 18 months suspended; and for burglary of a dwelling, in May 2000, for which he was sentenced to three years imprisonment, with all but two years suspended.

According to his guilty plea, on July 30, 2008, Ransom entered the M&T Bank located in the 8000 block of Colesville Road in Silver Spring, Maryland and handed the teller a demand note. The teller gave Ransom $892. Two days later, Ransom handed a demand note to the teller at BB&T Bank, located in the 11500 block of Georgia Avenue in Wheaton, Maryland. The teller gave Ransom $850.

United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein thanked the Federal Bureau of Investigation for its investigative work and commended Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan C. Su, who prosecuted the case.
