BANK ROBBER SENTENCED TO OVER 12 YEARS
Baltimore, Maryland - U.S. District Judge Richard D. Bennett sentenced Cecil Oakes, age 39, of Anne Arundel County, today to 151 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for bank robbery, announced United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein. Judge Bennett enhanced Oakes’ sentence upon finding that he is a career offender based on two previous convictions for escape and armed robbery. He was also on supervised release for a federal firearms conviction at the time of the bank robbery.
According to his guilty plea, on July 6, 2007, Cecil Oakes robbed the Citizens National Bank located at 3386 Fort Meade Road, Laurel, Maryland, passing a teller a note demanding money underneath the bulletproof glass. The teller handed over $3,479 to Oakes, who then left the bank, leaving his demand note with the teller. Oakes’ fingerprint was recovered from the demand note.
United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein thanked the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Anne Arundel County Police Department for their investigative work, and commended Assistant United States Attorney Bonnie S. Greenberg, who prosecuted the case.
